ATHENS - Georgia’s lopsided win on Saturday means Kirby Smart’s program has done something not yet accomplished in UGA history.

According to notes from UGA, this is the first time in the history of the program that the Georgia has started out 5-0 in three consecutive seasons.

“Under Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs roared out to a 9-0 start in 2017 that culminated with an SEC title, a Rose Bowl Game victory and an appearance in the CFP National Championship game for a final record of 13-2. In 2018, Georgia began the year 6-0, won the SEC Eastern Division and finished 11-3 with a Sugar Bowl appearance. This season, Georgia is 5-0 and carries a 15-game winning streak against SEC Eastern Division opponents.”

Sure, may of those 15 wins have been over directional schools and the like. But there have been some big wins in that time, too.

Wins over ranked Notre Dame and Mississippi State sparked Jake Fromm’s grasp on the starting signal caller spot in 2017. A year later, a road win over ranked Carolina and undefeated Missouri paved the way to another SEC East title. This fall Georgia already has two road conference wins, and a victory over No. 7 Notre Dame.

That’s four ranked wins in 15 games - not bad.

Of late, UGA’s first five games of the year holds up pretty well with other elite programs. Clemson also ha five ranked wins at the start of their last three seasons. LSU has three. Ohio State and Alabama only have two wins over ranked teams in that time. Oklahoma only has one.

Needless to say, winning in August and September doesn’t guarantee winning in January, but it is often a good indicator of things to come.

There’s so much left to this season. The No. 7 Gators still loom at the start of November. A road trip to No. 12 Auburn will be another test for this program. Time will tell if No. 23 A&M will have the same status as it had to start the season in the Sanford Stadium finale.

If UGA gets to the SEC Championship Game it will be confronted with a top-five-ranked team from the West - likely No. 1 Alabama or No. 5 LSU.
