Dawg Post is counting down the Top 50 UGA players of all time through the summer. Keep checking back eat weekday to see who we have next…

No. 31 - Deandre Baker, DB from Miami

It usually isn’t good for a player if you don’t notice them or forget about them at times. For cornerbacks, it’s actually a good thing. It means they aren’t getting picked on by their receiver and that they are handling their assignment.

Deandre Baker would go long stretches of going unnoticed. When he was noticed, it was almost always in a positive light.

Going against NFL-caliber receivers, Baker always met the match. Against the likes of Deebo Samuel, Baker more than held his own. Samuel only had six catches for 33 yards and was struggling all day to get breathing room.

In his junior and senior years, Baker didn’t allow a single touchdown against a receiver he was covering. You’d have to go all the way back to his sophomore year to find the last time he was scored against.

In 2017, his performance wasn’t as nationally recognized. But when Baker returned for his senior season in 2018, he was a well-known figure. After an even more dominating season, he was voted as a consensus All-American and became Georgia’s first-ever Jim Thorpe Award Winner.

Overall, Baker ended his career at Georgia with 116 total tackles, seven interceptions, 31 passes defended and as one of, if not the most, lock-down corners in UGA history.
