Top 50 UGA Players of All Time - No. 37 - Jake Fromm

He might have only played for two seasons, but junior quarterback Jake Fromm has already established himself as one of the top players in school history.

The former 5-star from Houston County is as “Georgia” as it gets. The middle Georgia superstar was youth baseball star as kid, leading the Warner Robbins Little League team to an impressive 2011 World Series run.

As a high schooler, Mark Richt was still the head coach at Georgia, and he already had his quarterback in McEachern lefty Bailey Hockman. Fromm committed to Alabama early in the recruiting process, but made the flip to Georgia once Kirby Smart took over as the head man in Athens.

Fromm signed with Georgia knowing their future star, former five-star Jacob Eason, was coming off an up-and-down freshman season. The job was Eason’s and Fromm knew that going into his freshman season. Word in Athens was that Jacob Eason was looking great in practice and was bound for a breakthrough sophomore season. After an early ankle injury in the season opener, Eason’s job was in jeopardy, and Fromm didn’t look back.

His first start came next weekend in the highly anticipated matchup with Notre Dame. The Bulldogs were traveling north and the entire country had been waiting for this game for years. Freshman Jake Fromm led the Bulldogs to a 20-19 win that night and the rest was history.

Fromm would grab hold onto the starting job after week 2 and wouldn’t let go. The Bulldogs traveled to Knoxville and put up over 40 points against the Vols, destroyed the Gators in Jacksonville, and secured the SEC Eastern crown. Fromm and the Bulldogs would go on to defeat Auburn in the SEC Championship, the biggest game in the history of the rivalry. After winning one of the greatest Rose Bowls of all time, Fromm’s Bulldogs came up just short to Alabama for the 2017 national championship.

As a true freshman that season, Fromm was 181/291 for 2,615 and 24 touchdowns with a QB rating of 160.1.

As a sophomore last fall, Fromm led another outstanding Georgia team to an 11-3 record and another SEC Eastern championship. Fromm beat Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia Tech, and the rest of the SEC East for the second consecutive season. After a mid-year loss to LSU, and with Georgia fans clamoring to play five-star freshman Justin Fields, Fromm carved up the number 9-ranked Florida Gators the following week, throwing for three 3rd down touchdowns. The Bulldogs then went up to Lexington to play the number 11-ranked Wildcats, where the Bulldogs won convincingly by 17 points. Like the previous season, while Fromm played well against Alabama, the Bulldogs came up just short in their conquest to beat the Tide.

As a rising junior, Fromm has all the tools around him to lead Georgia to another championship run this fall. He might not have the biggest arms, but Jake Fromm’s accuracy, leadership, and high football IQ have him poised for another great season.

Through his first two seasons, Jake Fromm is 387/597 (64.8%) for 5,364 yards and 54 touchdowns to go along with just 13 interceptions.
