I mean there are plenty of names I could throw out there, and that I will talk to with my guys, but here is the reality.
I am a Joe Schmo. I am not the elite of the elite donors that have a finger on the pulse of everything. I am not a coach on the staff. My advice goes in one ear and out the other, and I get it who wants anyone telling someone how to do their job when they have no idea what the job truly ever is like.
I will report back with the budget we have left and want to spend, and who is reasonable and follow from their, but I have heard that some people seem to be complacent with the roster construction as is. Whether they are just tired of recruiting and the bidding wars that comes with trying to build a roster, or thinking this roster can win now, or honestly just having ran the NIL budget to a point where they no longer want to spend.
I think this would a mistake. I have a feeling no matter what we are going to have an extra scholarship open (just a money thing), as now having 15 instead of 13 scholarships does make a difference, but I would heavily recommend we go after one more guy. We are at the point in the cycle where the within range good talent is gone, and the ones that left are the elite guys weighting the draft and fine picking between 2-3 schools they want. Anyone left that is uncommitted should be affordable, but not as skilled. Which is OKAY. In the modern age it is totally worth opening the checkbook for a backup or rotational piece. That sounds crazy, but someone is going to pay that player, and when Team A needs someone to step up due to injury or whatever, but did not open the Checkbook like Team B, Team B is going to be able to weather the storm when the same situation happens to them because they DID open the checkbook for a player that most people would deem as "not needed" unlike Team A.
For bubble, fringe, tournament teams like where we will end up being if we are competing to play in March, your season can make or break by a game or two, or a stretch of a week or two, so it is extremely important to have that blanket, that insurance, to fall back on if unexpected issues to arise. Nothing would be more frustrating than watching someone get thrust into action out of desperation that should not be playing, during a stretch of extremely important SEC play all because we did not want to go the extra mile to round out this roster and prepare for situations like that. (Think Tyrin's injury this year and how we were able to weather the storm thanks to the addition of guys like Deshayne and Dakota later in the transfer portal because we choose to keep spending. Not a perfect example but you get the idea).
