REDdawg did a great job of pulling together some numbers on White on the main board. It shows some interesting trends, that beg questions. No one disputes his success at LT, and his LT team certainly whipped Fox and our ass in the NIT. If UGA hires White seven years ago there would have been dancing in the streets and visions of Tubby Smith. And there was more than a little fear and loathing when UF did just that.

So, White goes:

2015. 21-15
2016. 27-9
2017. 21-13
2018. 20-16
2019. 19-12
2020. 15-10
2021. 19-13

We all know the NCAA stats by now.

But here's where things get interesting, and introduce some unknowns:

Here are White's recruiting ranks (national/sec) last few years:

This class: 20, 4
2021: 51, 11
2020: 41,10
2019: 8, 2
2018: 19, 5

It appears there is a corollary with COVID and White's recruiting and records.. And once that variable was alleviated, he has returned to superior recruiting relative to the conference, and holding his own nationally. Poor recruiting would certainly equate to the lesser records. We all are painfully aware White hit the portal and landed the Athens kid - who we apparently ignored.

It begs the question why White/UF had such a dramatic downturn during COVID relative to their trends. We just don't know.

A second unknown is Dean has been very open that the current Florida administration is not committed to athletics to a level that perhaps UF once enjoyed, Perhaps these White down trends are manifested in lack of resources. It would certainly provide an impetus for this sudden turn of events.

This leads to a third unknown at this point - is Brooks/UGA going to (finally) fund UGA basketball to a level that perhaps gets White back to his 15-17 levels. We just don't know. But you'd have to believe White doesn't trade an underfunded job for another underfunded job - with even lesser history.

To me this is about as good a hire as you were going to get factoring in all variables. There is a lot to be excited about - if the commitment is there by UGA. And White's trends are not objective, and he's in fact reached his ceiling. Of course, his current ceiling is the Sistine Chapel for UGA basketball.

Let's see who his assistants will be. And how much pride Jonas might be willing to swallow.

Good stuff. GA is rich recruiting ground for someone with the right resources. If White can hold his own here, which I think he can, there's no reason to think he won't be successful. The 2023 class is loaded, if he can make up ground on some guys. I, too, want to see what his staff looks like. I will say that White tried to hire Jonas a few years ago to UF, so he has a relationship with him to build on. Fingers crossed....

One last point - I will believe the administration is taking basketball seriously when I see Mike White in the helicopter making his rounds to GA high schools. White has to repair and re-establish our relationships with local HS and AAU coaches. In 4 years, Crean never even put on a coaching clinic, which was standard under Fox and Durham at least. Get those coaches interested in the success of the program!! So, put resources toward the program, particularly in recruiting and staffing.

White had good to very good records at La Tech but the facts are he, and they, got knocked out in their conference tourney all four years and they had zero NCAA bids. I like the timing now versus then. The Mike White we're getting today is a better, more experienced better coach than Mike White circa 2015 who'd never taken a team to the tournament.

Really nice, well thought out post Nostra. What you said about Covid and possible lack of resources makes a lot of sense. Outside of the Covid years, I think there is definitely enough positives to give us optimism.

One of those recent won-loss records was probably impacted greatly by his AA forward going out with a season ending injury.

Also one publication ranked MW as a top 5 coach for portal success/impact, probably not making the recruiting ranking as important.

That's a great point on losing Kevontae Johnson the last 2 years. How many teams can overcome the loss of the preseason POY and AA candidate? UF's record over the last 2 seasons was certainly affected.

Good point mountaindawg. I had actually forgot about that.

With his dad being a retired AD from Duke and two brothers as ADs, I believe that M. White definitely negotiated "financial commitment" from the UGAA before making this move. I suspect we will see tweaks to improve basketball facilities, more money for assistants/anylysts, and White and/or assistants will be doing some helicopter travel to avoid being stuck in traffic between Athens & ATL (and getting from location to location in metro ATL).

I sure hope you are correct. And I think you are.
