If we beat Bama, it's gonna be worse than last year and last year was pretty bad. But consider this....
Let's say we nip them with a Hot Rod FG at the last second or in OT. Does Bama suddenly go from being the most dominant team in the history of history to the #5 team in the land? Or do they get in the P/O, for a SECOND straight year even though, once again, they did NOT win their conference?

Let's say we do take down the Tide....and, the Buckeyes crush Northwestern and win the Big 10 with one loss....and Oklahoma destroys Texas, avenging that loss, much the same thing that happened to us last year, when we stomped Auburn in the SECCG. Now they too win their conference and are sitting there with one loss. So, two teams, with one loss, winning their conference...and Bama gets in over them with one loss and no conference championship, AGAIN....huh? You heard it here first....There will be rioting in the streets. Collage campuses will look like a scene from a Mad Max movie. Death threats.....furniture set afire....buildings vandalized. The playoff committee members will have to go into FBI protective custody....Jim Delaney will be hospitalized with a stroke.....but here's the real question.
What does my fellow Dawgposters think should happen? Would Bama deserve to get in?
Just curious...give me more than just a 'yes' or 'no'. I wanna hear some reasoning.

Darin-

Everyone I have read or heard has said Bama is in regardless of what happens against us on Saturday. BUT...I have heard or seen somewhere that when this final 4 concept was designed, one of the stipulations would be NO REMATCHES. To me, that is what makes this year different than last year-how is it fair for us to play Bama and beat them for a SEC title and then have to play and beat them a second time to win a national title. Auburn probably felt that way last year but had they beat us, Bama would have got in and they would have had to beat Bama twice-again, I think what makes this year different than last is the fact that we DID NOT play Bama last year for the SEC title, therefore the committee could then allow Bama in under the, 4 best teams get in point of view. This year, I personally think UGA and Bama are two of the top 4, but since they will meet for the SEC title, it was my understanding that a rematch would not be allowed. SEC title you can't help that since you play a regular season matchup and have two divisions but I had thought this playoff in college football was to avoid rematches-but maybe I am wrong. Just doesn't seem right to me to do that especially IF Ohio State and OU win their conference titles. I am sure the committee is pulling hard for Bama, but even with that, you will have OSU or OU being left out assuming both win. It is going to be a real mess regardless of how it plays out.

What about this, what if Bama beats us, but OSU and OU both lose as well. Who gets that last spot?? Does UCF move up there?? It will not be LSU since they lost to A&M, will not be Texas with what 3 losses, Wash State lost to Washington and now has 2 losses.

Yes, I think Bama (along w/ 12-0 Clemson and 12-0 Notre Dame) would get in under those circumstances since Alabama has beaten every team it's faced this year by an average of 35.3 ppg (no game closer than 22 points). None of the other one-loss teams have dominated their opponents as the Crimson Tide have this season:

Ohio State: lost by 29 points on the road to a 6-6 Purdue team; beat 9-3 Penn State by 1 point; beat 4-8 Nebraska by 5 points; beat 5-7 Maryland by 1 point in overtime

Oklahoma: lost by 3 points on a neutral site to a 9-3 Texas team; beat 9-2 Army by 7 points in overtime; beat 5-7 Texas Tech by 5 points; beat 6-6 Oklahoma State by 1 point; beat 8-3 West Virginia by 3 points

Btw, #7 Central Florida (12-0) has won its last 24 games (including a 1-point win over 8-4 Memphis), but their schedule ranks #94 and starting QB McKenzie Milton is out (dislocated knee on Saturday).

Well, Haney brings up a great point AFD....what's your take on that scenario. What IF, we play Bama hard and lose by a touchdown or FG. Then the Buckeyes lose to Northwestern, Texas knocks off the Sooners again....it seems then that the committee will have to pick between an undefeated UCF and then a 2 loss UGA team.....or possibly take a 3 loss Texas team if they destroy the Sooners. Is it possible that they could jump us, with 3 losses....what would be more enticing; Seeing an undefeated UCF team that has been crowing for 2 years now that they want a shot at bama or the best 2 loss team in the country (uga)?

Given that scenario (which assumes Central Florida beats Memphis on Saturday), my guess is that the College Football Playoff Selection Committee would pick undefeated Central Florida for the playoffs over a two-loss SEC program.

Here's a pretty good article (AFD, Haney and others) about Bama getting in...

https://ugawire.com/2018/11/26/if-georgia-wins-the-sec-alabama-should-not-be-considered-a-playoff-lock/

I didn't realize this, but they point out that Bama has the worst SoS than both Ohio St and Ok. That could bite them in the hiney when the selection process takes a closer look. Even though they've destroyed everybody, it might not get em in. I'm thinking the committee will use that to leave them out and make everybody else happy. No team has gotten into the playoff after losing their conference title game. The Buckeyes and Bama made it in without winning their conference, but they didn't PLAY for the title. Gonna be interesting...but of course, if we don't beat the Tide, none of this matters anyway.

UCF is likely to lose this week guys, without their QB to a Memphis team that nearly beat them before, losing 31-30.

I think Bama SHOULD be out IF we beat them, and both OU and OSU win, I don't see how you can for two years in a row leave out conference champs at 12-1, in favor or 12-1 Bama, last year it was 11-1 Bama. Is Bama a top 4 team, YES, but how can you screw TWO conferences and also have UGA face the possibility of having to beat Bama two times. If this plays out, it makes the conference championships meaningless essentially. It will mean a team that does not win their conference still gets in yet again. ND doesn't have to play in a conference title game, so they get a pass as well. What if ND was in the ACC in football like they are in basketball, you would have 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 this weekend. Seems the winners would just play and call it a day!!

If the conference championships were scrapped, here's what we could have instead, using five automatic bids for the major conferences, three at-large bids and home sites for the first round:

No. 8 Washington at No. 1 Alabama, yes, in Tuscaloosa.
No. 7 UCF at No. 2 Clemson, yes, in Clemson.
No. 6 Ohio State at No. 3 Notre Dame, yes, in South Bend.
No. 5 Oklahoma at No. 4 Georgia, yes, between the hedges.

You can have eight teams with legitimate claims for a playoff spot play each other, or you can have Clemson vs. Pitt.

That looks like a MUCH better solution than how it stands now-you would then have UGA playing Bama (assuming both win) in the semifinals, 1 vs 4 in a neutral site. UCF gets a shot and you can then say the best 4 teams are in the final 4. Obviously you can see that 1 and 2 seeds are rewarded with what would be much easier draws than 3 and 4 seeds.
