BREAKING: QB Dwan Mathis Flips to Georgia

Crazy things happen on Signing Day. It never fails.

Things can happen in such a short span of time, and that’s exactly what happened as the Georgia Bulldogs flip four-star quarterback Dwan Mathis from Ohio State.

With the possible transfer of Justin Fields, The big 6-foot-6 205-pounder out of Oak Park (MI) saw an opportunity to come to Georgia and immediately win the backup role behind junior Jake Fromm. Not a bad position to be in.

Mathis has been a Buckeye commit since June 24th, and the retirement of current head coach Urban Meyer only helped Georgia’s chances in the end.

So what will Mathis bring to Georgia?

Playmaking ability.

Mathis might be on the taller side, he’s a mobile passer who can really get upfield is he’s got some space. He’s a good runner and picks up big yards with his long stride.

As a passer, he’s got a big arm, but will need to work on his accuracy and fitting the ball in tight windows. He’s got good arm strength and can fling it downfield with ease. There’s a lot of talent in his arm, but it might take some time to develop it and work on his overall mechanics and fundamentals to be a more complete passer.

Either way, the potential is there. The Georgia staff is looking to add more dual-threats at the quarterback spot, so the addition of Mathis is a big one.

Georgia needed to add an impact quarterback in a major way after the Fields news, and while Mathis is certainly not Justin Fields, he’s a guy with talent who can come in and give a spark in special situations.

Overall, this was a great job by Kirby Smart and his staff to find someone of his talent at the last moment. The Bulldogs are recruiting Mathis’ teammate at Oak Park in 2020 OL Justin Rogers. The Georgia staff continued to have a relationship with Mathis the entire time, and it came in handy in the most critical of moments.

Another Signing Day win for Kirby Smart.
