ATHENS - Georgia Bulldog assistant Travaris Robinson spoke with the media this week about the safeties and Georgia’s defensive backfield.
On the safeties...
“I'm excited about all of them. We got some acquisitions, and we got guys that have changed positions a little bit. Resean Dinkins is playing a little more safety than he played last year where he was playing more STAR. You’ve got Kyron Jones in the mix. You got Jamarley Riddle in the mix. You’ve got Ty Boogie and Blake Stewart. You got a lot of guys fighting for those spots, and obviously we got KJ Bolden.”
“So right now, we’re just trying to figure out, number one, what to do. We’re trying to make sure everybody gets the right opportunities and the right amount of reps. Those guys have been doing a really good job with the reps that they've been getting. I'm excited about the progress that we're made.”
“I'm excited about KJ. He got a little bigger so he’s going to be a more thicker tackler. I'm excited about Dinkins. He's been in the system now. He understands how we work and how we play. Kyron, he wasn't doing a lot in spring so getting the reps that he’s getting in fall, it’s a blessing. Jamarley’s doing a good job of what we're doing. So right now, it's just a competition. And the one thing that everybody got to understand is production matters, right? And now, as we start to go into day 7 of practice, then now we can counter figure out exactly from who's producing the most, and then we start to decide then who's gonna be the guys that's trotting out there when we step out on the field in September.
On Resean Dinkins...
“I think he's doing a really good job, but he's playing the deep part of the field. It's almost like a baseball player. You have a guy that's in the infield, right, as opposed to a guy that's back there playing, right, with a lot of space, a lot of eyes looking at him. He's doing a good job with it. I thought they've done a really good job this summer. moving past spring and going to the summer and doing the play around practices, those guys done a really good job of working on their skills and working on the things that they need to work on. So I'm excited about Dink.”
“Obviously, he's in a huge competition. But at the end of the day, those guys love each other. We do a lot of team building. We do a lot of different things like that in the secondary room. So there’s no animosity towards each guy. Those guys are going out there there working hard and competing. I tell them all the time, the best player is going to start. If you're good enough, you're going to play. If you aren’t good enough, you're going to watch.”

On Tyriq Green...
“He can do a lot of different things. He's a talented young man. We throw a lot at him. That’s how we do it here at Georgia, man. We throw it on the wall and see what sticks, all right? If it falls off, we pick it up and we throw it back on the wall and see something else stick. And that's where we at with Boogie. He's doing a really good job at the roads that we have for him. Do we have a long way to go? Absolutely he does. But we’ve got some time to get there. But he's a talented guy but it’s not just him to be honest with you.
“You look at Blake Stewart, a guy from down there in Atlanta at Woodward, he's done a really good job. We’ve got some young guys in Zech Fort. We got some guys that are getting better. So I'm excited about the young guys in the room. I'm excited about the older guys in the room. We do have a lot of competition, which is that's what we want here. We want competition. Competition makes everyone better. Our guys are embracing that, and they're working towards that every day.”
On determining a starter...
“The first thing you have to have would be a defensive bag. You’ve got to be able to tackle to play safety. You’ve got first level guys, you got second level guys, and you got third level guys, all right?
“We play against top receivers, top quarterbacks. We got really good backs in our league. And our guys are working constantly. But the good thing about University of Georgia, is that we play against one of the best teams we going to play every day. I mean, that's what we do. We practice against our offense who do a multiple amount of things, and it puts a lot of challenges on our guys to be able to go out there and cover some of the top receivers we got, and some of those big tight ends that Hartley got, that I'm sure he talked about. I mean, it's hard. And our guys gained confidence by being able to cover some of the best guys in the country on our team and practice every day.”
On Ellis Robinson...
“Ellis is a really good player. He’s got really elite ball skills. He's a competitor. He's always been that way. He was there when he first got here. He just continued to get better. Now he's starting to understand the game. I'm sure it's slowing down for him. He starting to recognize formations, and that's the next step for a guy like that. The film study. Is that improving? Is it knowledge of the games? Is he learning the splits? He learning all the different things that's gonna help him be a better player, which he's definitely taking ownership in, and he's doing a really good job in fall camp.
