Joey Volchko Pitches Gem; Dawgs Pound Texas 7-1 at CWS
Joey Volchko ripped through nine innings of Texas hitters - spreading four hits and a run over over the full game - to power Georgia’s 7-1 over the Longhorns in its first game of the College Worlds Series Saturday night in Omaha.
The Dawgs jumped on the Horns to grab a 4-0 lead to start the game. Rylan Lujo’s home run was followed by two runs the Dawgs scored - powered by throwing errors by Texas. The Horns scored in the 5th to make the score 4-1.
But the Dawgs added two runs in the 7th when Lujo and Kenny Ishikawa added RBIs. The win over Texas means the Bulldogs will take on Oklahoma Monday night at 7 PM (ESPN). Texas will take on Alabama, which lost to the Sooners Saturday in an elimination game at 2 PM.
The winner of Oklahoma-Georgia game on Monday will have win one more game during the week to lock in a spot in the national championship series.
Earlier in the day All-American Daniel Jackson has been named the 2026 Buster Posey Award winner as the nation's top collegiate catcher plus claimed the Bobby Bragan National Collegiate Slugger Award, it was announced Saturday at the College World Series.
These are the latest national awards for Jackson, who on Friday took home the Dick Howser Trophy, which goes to the top Division I player in college baseball and is considered the baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. He is the first Bulldog in school history to win the Posey Award and the second to claim the Bragan Award and Howser Trophy, joining Charlie Condon in 2024.
