Former UGA Football QB Matthew Stafford Wins AP NFL MVP Award

ATHENS, Ga. – Former Bulldog and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has won the 2025 AP NFL Most Valuable Player award, becoming the third former Georgia player to win the honor (Fran Tarkenton, 1975; Terrell Davis, 1998). 

In addition to winning the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award, Stafford was also named to the Pro Bowl for the third time and was named an AP First Team All-Pro for the first time in his career.

Stafford’s MVP win is the first of his career and it caps a historic season for the 17-year veteran. He threw 46 touchdown passes, which led the league and set a new career high for passing touchdowns in a season, while throwing for 4,707 yards, a mark that also ranked first in the NFL. In addition to his dominance in the regular season, Stafford led the Rams to the NFC Championship Game after directing two game-winning drives in the previous two rounds of the playoffs, making him the NFL’s active leader in game-winning drives in playoff games with five.

The 2025-26 season was also a season of milestones for Stafford as he moved into the top 10 of NFL’s all-time passing yards and passing touchdowns lists.  He surpassed 60,000 career passing yards and 400 career passing touchdowns and cemented his place as one of the most prolific passers in NFL history.  Stafford also set an NFL record for the most consecutive touchdown passes without an interception (28), breaking a 15-year-old record previously held by Tom Brady.

Stafford quarterbacked the Bulldogs from 2006-2008 and posted a career record of 27-7 while throwing for nearly 8,000 yards and over 50 touchdowns. He was also named to the 2006 All-SEC Freshman Team and went a perfect 3-0 in bowl games with Georgia, including a win over No. 10 Hawaii in the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
