ATHENS - If you’re looking for some positives, Georgia Bulldog tight end Lawson Luckie is really starting to emerge as one of the biggest playmakers on offense.

The former four-star prospect from Norcross is in year two with the program and is having a really nice start to the 2024 season.  The 6-foot-4 240-pounder has hauled in six passes this season for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He caught two passes against Alabama with one touchdown and another two-point conversion.

Here’s what head coach Kirby Smart had to say about Luckie this week...

“Versatility, athleticism”, Smart told reporters on Tuesday. “He's really a tough guy. He's physical, tough, and not afraid to get after it. He's also a good pass receiver. You say, what has he brought? He's brought the versatility to run or pass, and he's getting better. I mean, he's still young in my eyes. Most times, your second year in college is like you're just starting to come out of your shell, and he missed a lot of time last year with the injury.

According to FanDuel, the Georgia Bulldogs are 24.5-point favorites against the Auburn Tigers this Saturday.

“The sky's the limit”, Smart added. “Lawson (Luckie) can be really good. He keeps getting better. I like his confidence, and I like his leadership and his mindset. He's got a toughness mindset.”

The No.5-ranked Bulldogs are looking for more out of their tight ends in the passing game. junior Oscar Delp has made big plays in the passing game in the past, and now Luckie is starting to make more of an impact as a sophomore.

He’s a guy who brings strong hands, but he’s also a technically sound route-runner. He can create space and has enough athleticism, burst, and vision to pick up yards after the catch. He was a weapon in the redzone against the Tide and should see more opportunities to make plays in that area of the field.

Who’s Next? The Auburn Tigers

Last season UGA football came from behind to defeat Auburn, 27-20, Saturday afternoon before 88,043 spectators at Jordan-Hare Stadium and a CBS national television audience.

Carson Beck led Georgia (5-0, 2-0 SEC) as he finished 23-for-33 for 313 yards and one touchdown. Tight end Brock Bowers led all receivers with eight catches for a career-high 157 yards, while running back Daijun Edwards rushed 19 times for a team-high 76 yards and two touchdowns. Linebacker Smael Mondon, Jr. tied his career high with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops and two tackles for loss, while defensive back Javon Bullard returned from injury for a career-best 10 tackles.

The game-winning play came from  Bowers. The Dawgs crossed midfield when Beck hit Bowers a 16-yard pass on third down before the game-winning 40-yard touchdown pass.

Bowers made the catch at the 25-yard line before evading the Tigers’ secondary for the winning score. On its final drive, Auburn neared midfield before defensive back Malaki Starks picked off Thorne on fourth down to seal the victory.
