ATHENS - UGA Football continued as the No. 1 football team in the country after the long opening weekend of college football. Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs destroyed Tennessee Tech in Athens to start the season.
UGA Football’s 48-3 win over Tennessee Tech was enough to keep the Bulldogs at the top spot in the rankings, which were released Sunday by the Associated Press.
The Bulldogs will travel to Kentucky Saturday night for the Dawgs’ first SEC game of the year. Georgia is considered a massive 24.5-point favorite to beat the Cats. The game will be in primetime on ABC at 7:30.
But it was Texas’ big win over Michigan that had the most effect on the rankings. The road win was enough for voters to leap the Horns over Ohio State for the No. 2 spot. Tennessee also climbed to No. 7 - jumping up seven spots - after smashing NC State in Charlotte.
Notre Dame fell to No. 18 after a shocking home loss to now-No. 25 Northern Illinois.
If this week’s rankings hold, Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs will face five ranked teams in 2024 (No. 2 Texas, No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 7 Tennessee and No. 22 Clemson).
