ATHENS - UGA football’s season opener against Kentucky Wildcats will kickoff the start of the SEC season. Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the country headed into the first road game of the season.
The Bulldogs will travel for the first time of the season - taking on the Kentucky Wildcats at Commonwealth. Georgia has struggled in the Bluegrass at night over the years. In 1996, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs lost to Kentucky 24-17. A 2010 night game was a 44-31 UGA decision. In 2012, Aaron Murray and the No. 13 Bulldogs survived a fight against 1-6 Kentucky with a 29-24 win at night.
Kirby’s first UGA team needed a Rodrigo Blankenship game-winning kick on the final play of the game to top Kentucky 27-24. Afternoon-to-night games in 2018 and 2022 were UGA wins, but not without struggle in 2022. Stetson Bennett played one of the worst games of his career, but UGA survived the freezing weather and the Wildcats to win 16-6 at Commonwealth.
