ATHENS - Georgia Bulldog quarterback Carson Beck could’ve left after last season.
Let’s be honest. If guys like Bo Nix and JJ McCarthy were 1st-round picks, Carson Beck could’ve been, too.
The Jacksonville native had a tremendous 2023 season, throwing for just under 4,000 yards and 24 touchdowns, leading the Dawgs to an impressive 13-1 record.
But for Carson Beck, that wasn’t good enough. His goal was to win his own national title. Not as a backup, but as the starter. Of course, a generous NIL offer came his way, but Beck’s mind was still on the bigger prize, which was to win another trophy.
To win a national title.
Beck spoke about that and much more with the media this week.
"That was probably the main reason for me coming back”, Beck said. “Coming back and finishing the job and winning that national championship. I think the team is really excited, especially as we head into a true game week. It's been a while since our last game against Florida State and honestly, for me, it seems like yesterday, and it also seems like so long ago. I know the team's excited; I know I'm excited, especially as we really start to prep. I know that the sense of urgency has definitely been up. You go through fall camp; you really focus on yourself. You get out of camp; you really start to hone in on your week one, which is Clemson for us. I know the guys are super excited, I'm super excited as we prepare for this game."
Last year, Beck wasn’t announced as the starter until right before the season started. This year, not only is he the returning starter, but he’s the face of the program and the leader of the top-ranked team in college football.
With Beck’s confidence at an all-time high, it’s easy to see why he feels great about the upcoming season.
"It's very different, some of the nerves I had last year going into week one are not present. I'm very anxious to get out on the field. Very excited, I have a lot of energy heading into week one considering we haven't played in so long. It's definitely a different mindset, same approach but in a different way. Seeing the difference between game one to game fourteen last year, I am excited to see what the jump is going to be from game fifteen to however many games we end up playing this season.”
Beck is an easy Heisman candidate after what he did last season, and a big game against Clemson will give him an early advantage. More importantly, a win over the Tigers would give Georgia an early, quality win to start the 2024 season.
As good as he was last year, expect Beck to be even better in his final season this fall. If he is, there’s a good chance the Dawgs may bring home another national title.
