ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will head into the 2024 season opener against the Clemson Tigers with an extremely talented and experienced defense line.

Everyone knows it. Even former Florida Gators legend Kevin Carter had to admit it this week. The CBS college football analyst knows a thing or two about elite defensive line play as a former Super Bowl champion.

When asked who his top defensive linemen are in college football, Carter had no problem admitting that his top choice plays in Athens, Georgia.

Of course, it’s junior Mykel Williams

“I love what he brings to the table”, Carter told the CBS panel. “Just think about Travon Walker. He’s being underutilized right now. What he can do and bring to the table is amazing. He can do more than one thing. He can play inside out outside. He can play on the edge. He can help you in the 3-4 scheme or can be a 4-3 guy. He can do everything you ask him to do from a down lineman standpoint”.

According to FanDuel, the Green Bay Packers have +800 odds to win the NFC Championship this upcoming season.

Carter is right. Williams is a long, athletic defender who can close running lanes and attack the quarterback against the pass. His length, natural athleticism, and pass-rushing technique have allowed him to make 46 total tackles and nine sacks through his first two seasons in the red and black.

Now, expect Williams to play at even more positions this fall as a junior. That’s according to defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann who spoke about Williams earlier this month during fall camp.

“Because of the style of defense that we play, the different personnel groupings, the packages, the way that we rotate and mix and match based on our opponent, the situation in the game, I think it gives us the opportunity to dual train guys like Mykel (Williams). Guys that can do multiple things, you obviously want to find ways to highlight them if they're productive, and Mykel's one of those guys. He's going to affect the game in a variety of ways this year.”

Williams is a versatile playmaker who will likely enter the 2025 NFL Draft with a big season this fall. He’s one of college football’s best defenders, and he could be tough to stop this fall. If Williams continues to develop and produce on the field, he could help lead Georgia’s defense to another special season.
