ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are in the middle of fall practice, but as you know by now, recruiting NEVER stops.

After a massive summer on the recruiting trail, Smart and the Dawgs have landed a commitment today from one of the top defensive back prospects in the state.

That would be four-star, Jontae Gilbert‍.

A do-it-all player for the Douglass Astros, Gilbert can make plays as both a receiver and in the secondary on defense. He was a nationally known prospect early in high school and has held a Georgia offer since November of 2022.

Gilbert was an early target in this class, but then things fell off a little bit. At the end of May, Gilbert didn’t even include the Dawgs in his “Top 7”. He took multiple visits to Athens this summer, allowing his relationship with the new staff in the secondary to continue to grow.

Georgia decided to push for Gilbert’s commitment, quickly climbing toward the top of his list of schools. Now, this impressive Atlanta athlete is staying home, giving Georgia another quality defensive back commitment in the 2025 class.

What is Georgia getting in Gilbert?

Size and versatility.

At 6-foot-1 and a muscular 185-pound frame, Gilbert will bring a promising frame to his ability to play at multiple positions in the secondary. At Douglass, Gilbert shined at cornerback, using his physicality to challenge receivers at the line while being able to shed blocks and make a big tackle on the perimeter. He plays hard each play and has enough speed and length to make plays down the field in coverage. He can run with just about any receiver in the area and does a good job of locating the ball and knocking it away.

He wasn't tested much in coverage but did make an impact against the run, finishing his junior season last fall with 21 total tackles, three TFLs and one INT. On offense, Gilbert caught 15 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown.

Those numbers don’t stand out, but when you turn on the film, it’s easy to see why. Gilbert locks down his side of the field, but at Georgia, he’ll be able to help at safety as well, giving him a chance to help in the box or run down the back trying to get to the perimeter.

Gilbert plays hard, and he showed enough to earn a scholarship spot in this class. He’s a talented kid who has his best football ahead of him.

Now, Gilbert gives Georgia five defensive back commitments in the 2025 class. He’s ranked as the No.16 CB and the No. 135 overall prospect in the country for the 2025 class.
