ATHENS - After taking just two wide receivers in the 2024 class, Kirby Smart and new wide receivers coach James Coley are hard after some of the nation’s best in the 2025 class.
While Coley has no problem recruiting Florida, Texas, and other states across the country, he doesn't have to leave the state of Georgia much to find his group of receivers.
Coley and the Dawgs have one receiver on the commit list in Savannah, Georgia native Thomas Blackshear, a four-star pass-catcher out of Calvary Day who brings a tough, physical presence at 6-foot-1 200-pounds.
Another in-state receiver Georgia fans should know about is four-star, Travis Smith Jr.. The long, athletic pass-catcher from Atlanta out of Westlake High School is one of the top wide receivers not only in Georgia but across the South for the 2025 class.
The 6-foot-4 195-pounder is a big target for James Coley and was back in Athens this weekend to take in Georgia’s big “scavenger hunt” weekend.

According to FanDuel, the New York Yankees have -230 odds to win the American League East this year.
“I had a great time with the staff and my family at the Scavenger Hunt”, Smith Jr. told Dawg Post. “Those guys are player-coaches and you gell with them easily. I had a chance to spend time with them even more this weekend. There’s a lot of excitement and energy around there so the culture continues to impress me as they expect nothing but success on and off the field. Numbers don't lie, and statistically, we had a chance to see why they win and make it to the next level at a high rate.”
Smith Jr. is no stranger to Athens as he’s been to the Classic City several times of the last 12 months, including a visit in April for G-Day along with his visit this past weekend. The playmaking receiver will be back in town again for his official visit the weekend of May 31st.
Smith Jr. has a commitment date of July 13th and will choose between Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn.
As a junior this past fall, Smith Jr. hauled in 53 passes for 892 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s ranked as the No. 11 WR prospect and the No. 92 overall prospect in the country for the 2025 class.
