ATHENS - The rich get richer, and the Florida Gators continue to struggle on the recruiting trail.

That’s because Billy Napier and the Gators just lost one of their top defenders in 4-star Nasir Johnson‍ who flipped to Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs today, giving Georgia their 28th commitment in the 2024 class.

Johnson, a big, athletic interior defensive lineman at 6-foot-4 300-pounds committed to Florida back on June 17th, but after multiple visits to Georgia this fall, the big Dublin (GA) standout knew he wanted to stay in the peach-state and play for the back-to-back national champions.

Not every defender gets this opportunity, and the Middle Georgia lineman jumped on it.

As a prospect, Johnson is a game-wrecker on the defensive line, clogging running lanes between the tackles and making his way into the backfield on a consistent basis. He’s quick of the line for his size and has an impressive swim move that allows him to get off blocks. He plays with good leverage and does a good job of driving offensive linemen backwards, creating a mess for the opponent’s rushing attack. He plays sound gap assignment and consistently does his job each and every play.

He has a great motor for his size and does a good job of getting down the line to make a play on the ball-carrier. He tackles well, can deliver a big hit, and has proven time and time again that he’s one of the top DL prospect in Georgia for the 2024 class. His athleticism really stands out for someone his size, and he’s only going to get better as he develops under Tray Scott and the defensive staff in Athens.

Against the run, he holds the point of attack, can fight through double teams, and makes it incredibly difficult for backs to find room to run up the middle. He has big, strong hands, and flashes on a consistent basis. That’s not easy to do for an interior lineman, but Johnson makes it look easy.

Big big, powerful, and a major addition to Georgia’s already stacked defensive line class.

Johnson now joins 4-star Jordan Thomas‍, 4-star Justin Greene‍, 4-star Joseph Jonah-Ajonye‍, 3-star Nnamdi Ogboko‍, and 3-star Quintavius Johnson‍ on the commit list.

He plays on both sides of the ball and is coming off a monster senior season in 2023. This fall, Johnson made 32 tackles, 12 TFLs, and two sacks. He’s currently ranked as the No. 21 DL prospect, the No. 24 prospect in Georgia, and the No. 171 in the country.
