ATHENS - There’s a reason why Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs continue to stack the roster with running backs.

It’s because running backs get dinged up. That’s what happens when you run the ball against tough, hard-hitting defenses throughout a full season.

Some injuries are more serious than others, but rarely will you see a running back stay healthy throughout their career, or even a full season.

The Bulldogs have multiple backs on the roster either coming off a season-ending injury (Andrew Paul), battling injuries from the spring (Branson Robinson), or doing their best to stay as healthy as possible come September (Kendall Milton).

It’s not a completely healthy group, but it’s a deep group with plenty of talent.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was asked about the running back room after their first preseason scrimmage this past weekend.

"Daijun [Edwards], Cash [Jones], Andrew Paul, Rod Robinson, Sevaughn Clark. That's five guys. JD [Joseph Daniels], those guys all got reps. In terms of when the season starts, we'll take a picture of what we have healthy and make a determination. Daijun is doing a great job. Cash Jones is doing a great job. I think Andrew Paul is still trying to get his confidence back. I don't think he was 100 percent today. I think that was a big psychological hurdle for him to go out there and get tackled live. Rod (Robinson) had a real nice run and some good pickups lately. I still think sometime before the season – I don't know when – Branson [Robinson] is going to be fine. Kendall is hopefully going to be fine. We got the backs that we got, and there's ways to be creative around your running backs and use the skill players you have."

It doesn’t seem like Kirby Smart is too worried about his backs.

“Branson [Robinson] is going to be fine”. That’s the key. Yes, Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards are the two veterans, and they’ll both see their fair share of carries, but Branson Robinson is a damn bowling ball. He’s a tick, powerful back who can get yards after contact. He powers through tackles and has plenty of burst for someone 220+ pounds. Keeping him fresh and healthy will go a long way for the Bulldog running game this fall.

If Andrew Paul gets his confidence back, he’s another bigger back who will provide depth and the ability to break tackles and get tough yards. He was extremely productive in high school and could see some carries come his way if he can stay healthy and get back to form.

Cash Jones can play, too. One of the more underrated players on the entire roster, Cash Jones has some explosiveness to his game and stronger than folks realize.

Roderick Robinson is a legend in San Diego. The young man ran through every defense he went up against last year. He’s still learning and developing, but he’s more than capable of helping this running back room if his number is called.

Again, this group is deep, and if they can just stay healthy, which looks possible come September, they will be tough to stop for just about any defense this fall.
