ATHENS - Former UGA football quarterback Stetson Bennett shined in his first NFL action on Saturday night.

Bennett, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year, threw for 191 yards and a touchdown during the Rams’ 34-17 loss in a preseason game against the Chargers.

"I thought he did a nice job," Rams coach Sean McVay said of the former UGA quarterback. "There were some tough situations there, and you could see the athleticism where he escaped.”

McVay and the Rams also have former UGA football QB Matthew Stafford on the roster. Stafford is the Rams’ starting signal caller. He helped the franchise win an elusive Super Bowl

According to FanDuel, Bennett and the LA Rams have +4500 odds to be the No. 1 Seed in the NFC Playoffs this year.

Bennett’s first NFL action came in SoFi Stadium, where he led the Bulldogs to a second national title in a row. He also went up against former TCU QB Max Duggan, who plays for the Chargers, Saturday night. Duggan ended the night with 19 yards passing and 20 yards rushing.

Bennett and the Dawgs slammed TCU 65-7 to win the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in January. It is the most lopsided bowl game in the history of college football. The game stamped Bennett as one of the all-time great Bulldogs.

A former walk-on from Pierce County, Bennett joined the Bulldogs in 2017 for Kirby Smart’s first trip to the College Football Playoff. That was his first season at UGA. After transferring and then returning to Georgia, Bennett was briefly the program’s starting quarterback before being injured against the Gators in 2020.

He stepped back into the starting role after JT Daniels could not play due to injury in the Dawgs’ top-ten matchup against Arkansas in 2021. Bennett started every game from that point forward in his career - losing only once from that point on. He and the Dawgs avenged that loss with the historic 33-18 win over Nick Saban’s Alabama team in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in January of 2022.
