ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs may be without big Darnell Washington for the 2023 season, but make no mistake, they still have the best tight end room in college football.

A big reason for that is superstar, Brock Bowers. The rising junior is pound for pound one of the very best players in college football and will go down as one of the very best Bulldogs in program history.

Bowers will get all the shine, but he won’t be the only Bulldog tight end making plays this fall.

Last year we saw freshman Oscar Delp see some action in a backup role, playing behind Bowers and Washington. As tough as it is to see the field as a true freshman, especially at tight end, the former West Forsyth Wolverine saw action in 13 of Georgia’s 15 games last year, showing the ability to not only catch passes, but make an impact in the run game as well.

Delp should see the field constantly in 2023 if Mike Bobo continues to use the same two tight-end sets that have been so successful over the last two years.

In year two this fall, it’s safe to expect Delp, at 6-foot-5 225-pounds, to have a breakout season for the Bulldog offense.

That’s what Todd Hartley is expecting.

Thanks for Georgia’s deep and talented tight end room, the Bulldogs now have -105 odds of winning SEC East for the second-consecutive season according to FanDuel.

“Oscar has all the talent in the world to continue to the tradition of tight ends at Georgia” Hartley told Georgia before the Peach Bowl CFP Semi-Final game against Ohio State. “He can really run. Has really good hands. It’s hard to play as a freshman in the SEC no matter the position. Especially in our offense. I’m very pleased where Oscar is at and I’m very excited about what he’ll bring to our offense in the future.”

Even against the Buckeyes, Delp made his presence known. With Washington banged up a little, it was Delp who saw the field in a big way during Georgia’s big 42-41 heart-pounding victory. Delp was a lead blocker for a Kendall Milton touchdown run and a Steston Bennett touchdown run. He sure didn’t play like a freshman, and that experience will help him during the 2023 season.

“I think Oscar Delp is immensely talented”, Hartley continued. “It’s hard to play as a freshman in this league at tight end and he had two generational guys in front of him. He’s done nothing wrong. I’m very pleased with his growth and development. “

Delp is a big target in the passing game, and if defenses plan on double-teaming Brock Bowers, Delp could see some opportunities to make a real impact down the field in two tight-end formations. He brings a physical presence, and he knows how to reel in a tough catch. The big pass-catcher has plenty of tools and could be bound for a true breakout season.

Last season, Delp caught five passes for 61 yards and one touchdown. Look for those numbers to increase in a big way in 2023.
