NASHVILLE - Is there a better assistant coach in college football then Glenn Schumann?

I don’t think so.

What Kirby Smart was to Nick Saban, Glenn Schumann is to Kirby Smart.

He’s Kirby’s right-hand man. A defensive genius. An ace recruiter. He’s a big reason why the Georgia Bulldogs are back-to-back national champions.

Schumann recruits, develops, and send his players to the NFL as well as any assistant coach or coordinator in the game. From an intelligence standpoint, Schumann might be the smartest coach on the entire Georgia staff.

He has a real chance of becoming a college football head coach one day. If not, he has a bright future in the NFL. But for now, Schumann is still in Athens, and he has a chance to build another special defense in 2023. According to FanDuel, the Bulldogs are already 20.5-point favorites to defeat the Florida Gators later this season.

Kirby Smart was asked about Schumann on Tuesday during SEC media day and had no problem raving about Schumann and what he means for the Georgia football program.

“Glenn Schumann is an incredible man and person”, Smart told reporters. “He's a graduate of Alabama. He came there on the Bear Bryant Scholarship. His dad played football at Alabama. He is the son of a football coach. He is extremely bright, extremely passionate. I rely heavily on Glenn for input on practice schedules, defensive design, thinking outside the box.”

“There's not a time when I think of who can I ask on my staff that understands what we want and what we need, Glenn Schumann is that guy”, Smart added. “He's very talented.”

“Glenn Schumann will be the first to admit he came to the University of Georgia without ever getting an on-the-field coaching position, and I was very confident in his role to do that. What has he done with that? He has produced one of the most productive inside linebacker rooms in the country, and he's one of the people that really believes in growth being a part of his process, and he continues to grow to this day.”

As far as development goes, there’s no defensive coach in college football doing what Glenn Schumann is going.

He took a talented Roquan Smith and turned him into a Butkus Award Winner and top-10 NFL Draft pick.

He took a former three-star running back in Tae Crowder and developed him into a starting linebacker for the New York Giants.

He signed 5-star Nakobe Dean out of Mississippi and made him even better, developing him into one of the best linebackers in college football, and another Butkus award winner

He developed Quay Walker into a 1st-round pick. He developed Channing Tindall and Monty Rice. And now, he’s turning Jamon Dumas-Johnson and Smael Mondon into two of the best inside linebackers in college football.

More importantly, he’s helped lead one of the top defenses college football has ever seen.

Here’s how Georgia’s defense has fared over the last four years since Schumann took on the role as co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.
