ATHENS - For the third consecutive season, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will have a new leading rusher next season.

It was Zamir White who led the team in rushing in 2020 and 2021, and last year it was Kenny McIntosh who led the Bulldogs with 829 yards on the ground. But with McIntosh off to the NFL, someone else will lead the way in 2023.

The first name that comes to mind is Kendall Milton. While he did miss spring practice this year, Milton has shown the ability to run through defenses when fully healthy. A tough, tackle-breaking back at 6-foot-1 220-pounds, Milton was a prized recruit in the 2020 class who will be entering his fourth season this fall.

Last season, Milton rushed for 592 yards, which was third on the team. However, his 6.9 rushing yards per attempt was tops on the team at running back. He has the ability to break off a big run and can really wear down a defense in the second half of games due to his physical, bruising running style. If he’s 100% healthy come September, Milton could really open some eyes with a massive senior season.

Then there’s Daijun Edwards. Arguably the most underrated and possibly underappreciated players on the roster.

Just a three-star prospect out of Colquitt County (GA) in the 2020 class, it’s safe to say the tough, slashing back has exceeded expectations over the last three years. Like Milton, the 5-foot-10 200-pounder is coming into his fourth season this fall with no signs of slowing down. Edwards has a big 2022 season last year as his 771 rushing yards were second-most of the team. He rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns against the Gators last year and had a three-touchdown performance against Auburn. He’s a slippery back with plenty of experience, and should see an increased role as a pass-catcher as well in 2023.

Of course, you can’t look past Branson Robinson. A bowling ball of a back that reminds Georgia fans of Nick Chubb, Robinsons is a strong, powerful runner at 5-foot-10 220-pounds who really shined multiple times last year in a backup role. As a true freshman last fall, Robinson rushed for 330 yards and three touchdowns, with two of them coming against TCU in the national championship game. The Mississippi native deserves more carriers and could be bound for a breakout sophomore season. If he doesn’t lead the team in rushing in 2023, then 2024 could be the year Robinson becomes one of the very best in all of college football.

While those three are likely to get the majority of the carries, Georgia fans still need to keep an eye on incoming freshman Roderick Robinson, Tennessee transfer Len’Neth Whitehead, and of course, the one and only Cash Jones.

Who? Cash Jones.

Will one rusher take the reins and dominate next fall? Or will we see a trio of backs handle the carries consistently all season long?

Either way, expect the Georgia rushing attack to be one of the very best in college football once again.
