ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs, winners of the last two national titles in college football, will not make it to the White House this summer to celebrate their titles.

The Bulldogs were invited to visit the White House on June 12, UGA said Tuesday, but the time of year made the invitation not plausible.

“The University of Georgia first received on May 3 an invitation for the Bulldog football team to visit the White House on June 12,” UGA said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the date suggested is not feasible given the student-athlete calendar and time of year.  However, we are appreciative of the invitation and look forward to other opportunities for Georgia teams moving forward.”

The Bulldogs finished the 2022 season undefeated for the first time since 1980. Georgia’s 65-7 win over TCU in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game was the program’s second in as many seasons.

No program has gone back-to-back as national champions since Alabama reached that accomplishment with Kirby serving as Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator in 2011-12. Georgia’s Stetson Bennett completed his long journey in college football as one of the few signal callers to win the national title as a starter in two seasons.

Bennett’s improbable march to the mountaintop doesn’t match the rest of the Dawgs’ powerful program, which is loaded with five- and high-star recruits who were coveted by nearly every program in the nation.
