ATHENS - Almost a week after the NFL Draft one thing is clear: Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have taken the No. 1 spot in college football amongst the talking class.

Even before ten former Georgia Bulldogs were drafted the praise for Kirby’s program came pouring in over the airwaves.

“That's unbelievable work by Kirby Smart, and that staff down there to get these guys and develop them to the point were they have real, significant value for themselves. That's unbelievable. You just have to tip your cap to what's going on at that program,” ESPN’s Louis Riddick said during the draft.

What’s been going on is a lot of winning - that is to say only losing three times this decade. And if you listen to oddsmakers, Georgia will be doing even more winning in the near future. The Dawgs are listed as the favorite to win the College Football Playoff National Championship Game right now with odds that place the probability at nearly double that of Alabama.

And it has been Bama that’s been pushed to the side more than any other program by the Dawgs. Georgia had long ago passed the Gators, who have been full of dysfunction over the last decade. Tennessee has not defeated the Dawgs since a Hail Mary pass in 2016. Auburn has only once beaten UGA with Kirby as coach. Georgia Tech has fallen off of a cliff this century. Clemson, who the Bulldogs have only played once of late, has become the popular pick to face dive in 2023. We will see if that happens.

But after a narrow win over Ohio State in the Peach Bowl, it was the Dawgs’ throttling of TCU that squarely put the crown on a new head - that of the Dawgs.

"Yeah, Georgia has taken over for Alabama,” ESPN’s Todd McShay commented back to Riddick.

McShay and Riddick were talking in terms of the Draft specifically, but they were sprinkling in their opinion that Georgia has become the top dog in the sport, so to speak. And Alabama’s Nick Saban agrees:

"Georgia has won two national championships in a row, so I'd say for the moment they are the best,” Saban told ESPN in late April. “They’ve proven on the field that they are the best for the last two years. But success is not a continuum for us. It's not a continuum for anyone.”

Totally correct.

"Nick knows what's up. He knows what he has to get done. It is just fun to watch. We all benefit from it,” Riddick said.
