ATHENS - The Dawg Post crew fills you in on their picks for 2023 G Day.

Matt’s Picks:

In Saturday in Athens. Here’s what will happen during Georgia’s G-Day scrimmage this weekend.

Which QB will have the best day?

Give me Carson Beck. This might be the easy answer to lean on, but I expect the veteran quarterback to show he’s capable of leading this team to a third-consecutive championship. It’s Carson Beck’s time to shine, and I expect him to have an excellent day on Saturday. He has the arm talent, he’s a better athlete than most realize, and he has a firm understanding of what’s expected from him.

Now, I do expect big things from Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton as well. They both have the told to lead Georgia to the promise land, and I expect both to make some eye-opening throws, but Saturday evening, folks will be talking about Carson Beck looking like QB1.

With the running backs a little banged up, there’s no reason not to let the quarterbacks rip it all over the field. I’m expecting lots of points and plenty of passing yards between the three. In the end, I’ll take Carson Beck having the best G-Day performance on Saturday.

Over/Under 46 points?

I’ll take the over all day here. I love this Bulldog defense, but with the quarterbacks leading the way, I’m thinking these offenses could go up and down the field against a defense that likely won’t be showing a ton. Smart will occasionally have them test the quarterbacks in different ways, but I think the offense will have a big day. The quarterbacks will shine, and that means plenty of points between the hashes. A late touchdown or two, something we’ve seen in plenty G-Day scrimmages before, could be the difference.

Give me points, points, and more points.

Biggest takeaway from G-Day?

The Bulldogs are loaded with young talent. Once again, I expect the quarterbacks to have a big day, but I expect Georgia fans to like what they see from some of the sophomores and incoming freshmen.

Look for Oscar Delp and Lawson Luckie to see plenty of passes come their way. Second-year wideout Dillon Bell could find the end-zone or two. Linebackers Raylen Wilson and CJ Allen could open some eyes defensively. Freshman running back Roderick Robinson will be tough to miss out there.

Joenel Aguero is a young name in the secondary who has a chance to make an early name for himself. This team is loaded with young talent, and these young pups have a chance to show off their talent in the team’s final spring scrimmage.

Ryan’s Picks

Which QB will have the best day?

I am probably going to be a little too complicated with my answer. I think Carson Beck will have a better day statistically and overall better day, but Brock Vandagriff is going to make a handful of plays with his legs that wows everybody.

So, my answer is Carson Beck. I think he is the better quarterback. He has been waiting longer for his opportunity, and it has never been “go time” for him more than it is right now.

Over/Under 46 points?

Give me the over. I feel like thes spring games are usually pretty low scoring, but this G-Day is different from the last couple of years. The quarterback competition is going to lend its way to more passing, which is probably going to lead to more scoring. The Dawgs are really thin at running back for the spring. I don’t expect there to be a lot of handoffs on Saturday.

I think the Georgia defense is going to be really good again, but this game just doesn't feel like it is about them.

Biggest takeaway from G-Day?

There are a few things I think are going to happen, and some of them are extremely simple:

  • Arian Smith is going to catch a deep ball from Carson Beck
  • Dominic Lovett will have a few catches and a touchdown
  • Gunner Stockton is going to make a play outside of the pocket that turns heads
  • Lawson Luckie will be the most productive tight end on the day
  • Multiple sacks/pressures from Bear Alexander

Dean’s Picks:

Which QB will have the best day?

This is probably the question of the spring. Both Brock Vandagriff as well as Carson Beck have the ability to impress on Saturday. My suspicion is that Beck will have the better day, but that's a shot in the dark. The fact of the matter is that Georgia fans should hope that this isn’t obvious - meaning, both play well enough to not know who should be the starter.

That’s probably not what’s going to happen.

G Day quarterback fights are usually Rorschach tests for fans. They come into the day with a preconceived notion of what is or “should be” happening, and then try to figure out how to confirm that with the results of the day.

While I perceive or think that Beck will be the one with the better day, I am waiting to see what happens. My guess is Beck will have the better day, but that’s a pure guess based on BVG not being able to take advantage of his full running like he can.

Over/Under 46 points?

I’m going over.

Mike Bobo has an ego, too. And as good as this defense has been over time, G Days have a way of producing scoring. That said, Kirby’s G Days have been pretty low scoring. I’ve got this thing going over because although it will be a shortened game, there will be a lot of throwing.

And throwing “usually” results in scoring.

Biggest takeaway from G-Day?

I think the biggest takeaway will be what happens with the quarterbacks. That will be the biggest takeaway by far - and what happens with the offense in general. I am going to be curious to see what the digital reaction to Bobo’s offense is going to be.

If it looks remotely like the Gators’ on Thursday night… God helps us all. It is hard to believe UGA’s offense will look “that” bad. Florida combined to score 14 points deep into the game… that’s a warning sign for sure.

Who will lineup at both tackle spots for the No. 1 offensive line? Who will be the corner opposite Lassiter? Who will be in the secondary? What about at kicker?

There are some questions, but not a ton. This will be one of the most interesting G Days we have seen in some time - perhaps in the same category as 2010 on that front… and somewhat like 2016 - somewhat being a bit of a stretch.

And there’s a new mascot… which is likely the most long-lasting change of the day.
