ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are having a busy month of March. Between the start of spring practice and hosting prospects on campus, it’s safe to say the Georgia staff has been putting in the hours recently.
Smart and co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann had a couple impressive linebackers from Virginia on campus recently, and Dawg Post caught up with both to get an idea of what they liked most during their visit to Athens.
One inside linebacker target to know is four-star Kris Jones. The Mountain View (VA) standout is an excellent weak-side defender who can run down the ball-carrier with ease from behind. Long and athletic at 6-foot-3 225-pounds, Jones is a versatile defender who can rush the passer from the outside, or help stop the run between the tackles from the inside. He’s quick off the line and flashed big-play ability on a consistent basis.
Jones was in Athens for a multi-day visit last week from March 15-17 and gave Dawg Post a quick note on how the visit went.
“My favorite part was just sitting in with coach Schumann and seeing how the defense works on film and in the classroom. UGA is the King of the SEC and a place where I know I can grow as a LB.”
Jones is ranked in the On 3 Industry Rankings as the No. 18 LB prospect, the No. 2 prospect in Virginia, and the No. 175 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class.

The second Virginia linebacker in town recently was Salem (VA) linebacker, Chris Cole. A two-way standout being recruited to play linebacker at Georgia, Cole is a playmaking defender with size at 6-foot-3 and 209-pounds.
At linebacker, Cole knows how to deliver a strong tackle. He’s tough, instinctual, and has a natural feel for the position. He can make plays in coverage, and he’s a stout run defender. Now that he’s put on some good weight, college coaches have noticed, and it earned him an offer from Georgia during his recent visit.
“The Georgia offer was a dream come true! Definitely a blessing to receive an offer from such an elite program. Coach Smart and Coach Schumann believe that I’m a great fit for their program. Georgia has a great system that has made them back to back National Champions.
“They were really excited about my gains”, Cole added. “No longer 185 as I was during my sophomore/junior season. I weighed in yesterday at 209 with limitless upside potential. Coach Smart and Coach Schumann is recruiting me for the inside linebacker position.
“Spending time with Coach Schumann was a great experience”, Cole continues. “During practice he was focused on details. As a person he likes to get more in depth and build solid relationships with his players.”
Cole is ranked as a three-star prospect and just the No. 87 overall linebacker in the country according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
