ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have a couple of big pieces that they need to replace on offense this spring.

Replacing Stetson Bennett, Broderick Jones, and Darnell Washington won’t be easy, but they also need to replace Kenny McIntosh, the team’s leading rusher from last year.

Not only did McIntosh lead the team in rushing with 829 yards on the ground, he also produced 505 yards as a receiver.

He was a true game-changer who made plenty of key plays throughout his Bulldog career. While he’ll certainly be missed, Dell McGee still has an extremely talented running back room, and he’ll have a new leading rusher in 2023.

Let’s take a quick look at the top candidates to lead the Bulldogs in rushing next fall?

The two top options are obviously Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards. Rising sophomore Branson Robinson should have an increased role next season, but in the end, it would be surprising if either Milton or Edwards didn’t lead the team in rushing if they both stay consistently healthy.

Last season, it was Edwards who was 2nd in the team in rushing behind McIntosh, ending the season with 771 rushing yards on 139 carries for an average of 5.5 yards per carry. He also found the end-zone seven times during Georgia’s 2022 national championship season.

The Colquitt County native and former four-star prospect is a slippery back with vision, balance, and burst. He’s excellent after contact and runs as hard as anyone in the SEC. A tough, physical back with quick feet and change of direction, Edwards quietly had a very strong season for the Bulldogs last year.

Then you have Kendall Milton. A big, bruising back who continues to improve more and more, Milton has a chance to finally have a true breakout season in 2023. One of the top running backs out of high school in the 2020 class, Milton’s tough running style and ability to bowl through tackles makes him an easy candidate to take the reins and lead the running backs next fall. Last season, Milton rushed for 590 yards on just 86 carries for an impressive 6.9 yards per rush. When he’s healthy and at his best, there aren’t many backs better than Milton across the country who are coming back for the 2023 season. The talent and potential is easy to see, and many expect a monster season from Milton in his fourth and final season.

Of course, there’s still Branson Robinson. A thick, powerful back with plenty of muscle, Robinson looked like a Nick Chubb clone at times last year. In a reserve role during his freshman season last year, Robinson rushed for 330 yards on 68 carries with three touchdowns. Just ask Auburn or TCU how good this kid is. He’s a bowling ball who runs through tackles with ease, giving the Bulldogs another back who can pick up yards after first contact. He may not lead the team in rushing with two veterans ahead of him on the depth chart, but make no mistake, Robinson should see more carries and bigger opportunities come his way in 2023.
