ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are doing their best to lock up the state of Georgia.

And right now, they’re doing an excellent job.

They’re off to a tremendous start in the 2024 class, and they sit in an excellent position for some of the state’s top 2025 prospects as well, with one of them being elite offensive tackle, Mason Short.

The big 6-foot-6 295-pound sophomore out of Evans High school in the Augusta area already holds an offer from some of the top programs in college football, including one from the in-state Georgia Bulldogs.

The elite tackle is a big Georgia target for assistant Stacy Searles and spoke with Dawg Post recently about where the Bulldogs stand in his recruitment.

“The guys love him”, Short said about Searels. “They see him as that funny uncle and someone that has their respect. He has great relationships with his guys and too see that is good. I’m all about relationships.”

What is Short’s relationship with coach Smart?

“Coach Smart is one of the busiest men on the planet when recruits are visiting on campus. When he does get the opportunity to see me it’s brief but he checks up on my family and asks how I’m doing. We have a good relationship right now.”

What makes Georgia special?

“Georgia is all about brotherhood. Other schools are too, but at Georgia they’re big on having each other’s back. You see that when you watch the games, practice, and in the weight room.”

What’s next for Short?

“I’ll be at Florida State on March 11th and then Tennessee on the 25th. I definitely plan to get back to Athens and Tuscaloosa as well. Right now I’m having fun and seeing schools that I haven’t seen before.”

Short talks about his fall visit to Georgia for the Tennessee game

“I think two. The best one was the rain game. That was awesome. I remember seeing Jamaal Jarrett out there swinging the towel. It’s cool to see the environment there.”

What means most to Short in his recruitment?

“Definitely development. It’s about getting better each year. I want to go somewhere where they can develop me to be the best I can be.”

Is there pressure for Short to sign with Georgia down the road?

“I hear it in the hallways every day. I hear it as the gas station. It’s ‘Go Dawgs’ everywhere. I hear it every day but I’m just keeping my mind open to everyone right now.”

As a prospect, Short already looks like a SEC-caliber prospect with a long, lean frame with plenty of room to add more mass and muscle. He started all season at right tackle as a freshman and dominated at left tackle as a sophomore in 2022. He’s a nasty run blocker who does an excellent job of securing his hands on defenders and driving them into the ground. He’s strong in the upper body and moves his feet well for someone his age.

He’s got plenty of height and length, and shows some athleticism in space. He’s a promising pass protector on the left side. Whether is was in the run game or the passing game, Short consistently did his job and put opposing defenders on the ground. He has an incredibly high ceiling and his best football is still years ahead of him. Dawg Post ranks him as a top-10 prospect in Georgia for the 2025 class with five-star potential down the road.
