ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will be without one of their top young defenders for spring practice.
That’s according to a report from DawgsHQ who reported on Monday that former 5-star Marvin Jones Jr. will miss the entirety of spring practice after “undergoing surgery to correct a shoulder ailment.”
The pass-rushing specialist and one of Georgia’s highest-ranked signees in the 2022 class out of American Heritage in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jones Jr. is a promising outside linebacker with length and quickness off the edge.
The 6-foot-5 250-pounder played in 11 games last year, making four total tackles and one sacks.
Jones Jr. was ranked in the 247 Composite as the No. 3 EDGE defender, the No. 4 prospect in Florida, and the No. 24 overall prospect in the country.
The standout defender was held back as a freshman last year due to injuries but still found a way to see the field in a reserve role at the end of games. It’s clear the staff wanted him to see the field and get experience early on as they have big plans for him in the future.

According to the DawgsHQ report, Jones Jr getting surgery now will give him time to get back to 100% for fall practice. Still, missing spring practice is never ideal, especially for someone in their second year hoping to climb up the depth chart.
Missing spring ball will obviously set him back, but the talent and potential is easy to see. Look for him to bounce back and be ready to go for the 2023 season opener against UT Martin on September 2nd in Sanford Stadium.
Other outside linebackers to know include Chaz Chambliss, Darris Smith, Damon Wilson, and Samuel M’Pemba.
