ATHENS - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have targeted Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Todd Monken to fill the same position.

That’s according to multiple reports including one from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who says that Monken is “one name to watch” for the open job. Tampa fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on Thursday morning after he spent four years with the franchise.

"We appreciate the hard work and contributions that all of these coaches made to our successes over the past four seasons," Bucs coach Todd Bowles said in a release Thursday afternoon. "As a collective group, we did not meet the high standards that had been set for this past year and my focus now is on doing what is needed to ensure a successful 2023 season. These were very difficult decisions but something that I felt was necessary for our football team going forward."

Monken was the offensive coordinator in Tampa when Dirk Koetter served as the head coach from 2016-2018.

One variable to watch on the Tampa Bay front is Tom Brady. It is unclear if the Super Bowl-winning quarterback will return to Tampa for another season, or sign with another franchise. Brady is an unrestricted free agent.

Monken was hired by Kirby Smart heading into the 2020 season in Athens. Monken shuffled through three starting quarterbacks that season as the Bulldogs ended the season with a win in the Peach Bowl and a top-ten ranking.

In 2021, Monken and the Bulldogs went 14-1 and captured the first national title in four decades at Georgia. That season Monken was confronted with a change at quarterback early in the year - moving from J.T. Daniels to Stetson Bennett. Bennett never relinquished the job, and rolled on to another national title in 2022.

Winning back-to-back national titles has never happened in the history of the College Football Playoff. Monken’s offense averaged over 50 points a game the final three games of the season in the SEC Championship, the Peach Bowl and the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
