Schumann’s resume speaks for itself.
He currently has the best inside linebacker room in college football and was able to hand-pick his linebackers in the 2023 class.
Schumann doesn’t miss on the recruiting trail, and he went 3/3 in the 2023 class, signing three of the nation’s top linebackers this year.
Of course, I’m talking about four-stars Raylen Wilson, Troy Bowles, and CJ Allen.
Head coach Kirby Smart spoke about Schumann’s linebacker haul last week during the Early Signing Day period.
“Well, a really talented group in terms of speed, athleticism”, Smart said. “In the day and age that we are in right now where the guys are fast, athletic, have got to play in space, got to be able to strike and play with toughness, but also high character.
Those three guys bonded, got to be good friends, have connected. I think Schumann and the defensive staff have done a tremendous job kind of selling the brand, but these three guys all came out and did. Look what these two guys are currently doing. Look what the guys we've signed last year that are here and playing roles on special teams.
You'll develop here. You'll become better, and you'll have fun doing it. That group is tight. I think it kind of recruits itself when you talk about Nakobe, Quay, and Channing, what they've done. These guys, they want to emulate guys like that. They're really high-character kids. Really impressed with everything about those three guys.”
The three incoming linebackers know what the deal is. They know that if they come to Athens hungry and with a high work ethic, they can reach every goal they have in mind. Under Schumann, not only will they have a dependable path to NFL, but they’ll be able to compete for a national championship or two as well.
Allen, arguably the top linebacker prospect in Georgia, is a tough athlete who rarely came off the field last year for Lamar County. Offensively, the physically-built 6-foot-1 220-pounder rushed 162 times for 1,628 yards and 25 touchdowns. At linebacker, he made 84 tackles as senior.
Then you have Troy Bowles. An instinctive linebacker with quickness and cover skills, Bowles is one of the top defenders not only in Tampa, but across the state of Florida. The 6-foot-1 205-pounder is a cure tackler with 76 tackles on the season and an impressive 5 INTs.
Of course, there’s Wilson as well. The Tallahassee native is an elite defender with impressive side to sideline speed. Like Bowles, he’s an excellent run defender who also excels in coverage. A tackling-machine who flashes consistently, Wilson made 120 tackles and an outstanding 20 TFLs. He knows how to get after the quarterback as well, making 11 sacks.
The talent is there. The speed is there. The toughness is there.
Schumann and the Bulldogs have built a machine at linebacker, and they’ve got three more guys on the way who are ready to make an early impact.
Under Schumann’s leadership, it’s safe to expect all three to develop and thrive in Athens over the next several years.
