ATHENS - LSU head coach Brian Kelly has the LSU Tigers in the SEC Championship in his first year running the show in Baton Rouge.

Now they did just get waxed by Texas A&M over the weekend, giving up 274 rushing yards on the ground, but hey, they’re still SEC West Champions.

Kelly is obviously excited about his team playing in Atlanta this weekend, but he’s not as excited to go up against Georgia’s dynamic tight end duo in Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington.

We all know the Bulldogs love having those two in the game-plan. Brock Bowers is the best receiving tight end in college football. Darnell Washington has emerged as a major receiving threat this year due to his size and ability to gain big yards after the catch. You could say they’re “lethal” in a way.

“I think 'lethal' is a good word”, Kelly said about Darnell Washington. “He’s a large person, 6'7". I mean, there's nobody that really has a favorable matchup against him.”

He’s right. Is there another player in college football like Darnell Washington? Someone his size who can basically run routes as an offensive tackle? He’s an excellent blocker both on the edge and on the perimeter, making him a critical part of Georgia’s offense both in the run game. Of course, he’s a big target for Stetson Bennett in the passing game as well.

Then there’s Brock Bowers. Arguably the best pound-for-pound player in college football. Another terrific run blocker with receiver-like speed and ball skills. Good things happen when Georgia goes to Brock Bowers, and we could see a lot of that on Saturday evening in Atlanta.

“Then Bowers”, Kelly added. “He leads the team I believe in receptions. He's a Lombardi Award finalist. Coach Monken gets him involved in everything from handoff sweeps to I don't know if he's thrown the ball yet, but I'm sure he will. He's just a versatile player. He's a guy that can break games open. As talented and as productive as a tandem that you'll see.”

“He’s a guy that can break games open”, Kelly said. That about sums it up. Brock Bowers is a game-changer who consistently finds a way to make big plays. He’s a vertical threat, but he’s also someone who can pick up big yards in the screen game. There’s nobody quite like Brock Bowers in college football, and it doesn’t look like there’s anyone on LSU’s roster who has a chance to slow him down.

We’ve said all year that the Georgia Bulldogs have the best tight end group in college football. By a mile. And Brian Kelly agrees.
