STARKVILLE - Kirby Smart and the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs will take on the No. 7 LSU Tigers at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in the 2022 SEC Championship Game.

LSU beat Arkansas 13-10 in Fayetteville while Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs won at Mississippi State Saturday night. Those two results combined with Alabama’s win at Ole Miss locked up the matchup.

The game will be the fifth time the two programs have faced off in the title game - LSU is 3-1 in those games. The winner an LSU-Georgia SEC Championship Game has gone on to play for a national title after all but one of those contests (2005).

Nick Saban’s LSU squad beat Mark Richt’s Georgia team 34-13 in 2003 on the way to Saban’s first national title. In 2011, Les Miles’ No. 1 Tigers took nearly three quarters to get going before cruising to a 42-10 win over Aaron Murray and the Bulldogs. No. 1 LSU lost its rematch to Alabama 21-0 in New Orleans as Saban and the Tide won the 2011 national title. In 2019, Joe Burrow-led LSU took out Jake Fromm and the Georgia Bulldogs 37-10 in Atlanta on the way to a 15-0 national title season.

LSU has not won the SEC West either time Georgia has played for the national title of late. In 2017, Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs beat Auburn 28-7 on the way to the program’s 13th SEC title. Georgia lost 26-23 to Saban and the Tide in the CFP NCG that season. In 2021, Saban and the Tide beat No. 1 Georgia 41-24 in Atlanta for the SEC crown before losing 33-18 in the CFP NCG in Indianapolis.

The LSU-Georgia game will be broadcast by CBS at 4:00 PM EST on December 3, 2022. Before that LSU closes the season with a home game against UAB before traveling to Texas A&M to close the season. Georgia travels to Kentucky before hosting rival Georgia Tech to end the year.
