ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs are considered major favorites to beat their arch-rivals the Florida Gators

The Dawgs were installed as a 23.5-point favorite to beat the Gators Saturday night. The game will be broadcast on CBS and will kickoff at 3:30. No. 1 Georgia and the Gators were both off this week in anticipation of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

Any line over 20 points would the largest in the history of the game between the two old rivals. Florida was a 19-point favorite heading into the 52-17 beating of Georgia in 1995. Two years later the Gators were 18.5-point favorites before being shocked by the Dawgs in a 37-17 blowout win over the Gators. In 2011, Mark Richt’s first season as coach at UGA, the Dawgs were 19-point favorites. The Gators won 24-10 in row final game between Georgia and a Florida-led Steve Spurrier team.

Since that game the two teams have rarely been favored by double digits. In 2006, the Gators were 13.5-point favorites, but held on to beat Georgia 21-14. In 2009, No. 1 Florida was a 16.5-point favorite and won 41-17. 12-point favorites Georgia was upset 38-20 by the Gators in 2014.

Georgia has twice throttled Florida as a double-digit favorite of late. In 2017 the Dawgs were a 13-point favorite and pounded the Gators 42-7. Last year the Dawgs were 14-point favorites, the biggest line on record for the Dawgs, and won going away - 34-7.

Florida has struggled against the line lately. The Gators are 3-11 in their last 14 games against the spread - with two of those wins coming this year in their best performances of the season against Utah and the Vols.

The line suggests that Georgia has a massive 97% chance of winning the contest. Since 2010 Georgia has been favored by at least 20 points 50 times. Georgia is 49-1 in those games. The only loss came in 2019 when Will Muschamp’s Gamecocks shocked UGA in overtime in Athens.

The mid-fall game between these rivals usually features beautiful weather. On average this game is played in 72-degree weather. More often than not it is described as “cloudy” at kickoff. The warmest game between the two was the 2015 game, which was 81 degrees at kickoff. A year before the game was played at 58 degrees - the coldest game in the last decade between the two.
