ATHENS - We told you it was going to be a big month of July for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs, and while it hasn’t been a perfect month, the Bulldogs haver added a commitment today from one of the top defenders in the country.
That would be high four-star safety Joenel Aguero.
A major target for Kirby Smart and Will Muschamp from the very beginning of his recruitment, Aguero decided to commit to the Bulldogs over Miami, Ohio State, Florida, and Alabama.
A borderline five-star prospect, Aguero is a do-it-all safety who always had the Bulldogs high on his list. The Miami Hurricanes did everything they could to land the playmaking defensive back, but in the end it was the reigning champions who earned his commitment.

So what are the Bulldogs getting in Aguero?
Size, instincts, and reliable hands.
The St. John's Prep (MA) star has dominated so far in his high school career and already looks like an SEC defender at 6-foot-0 200-pounds. He’s a physical run defender, shows impressive instincts for the position, and covers a lot of ground in coverage. He can come down and play in the box and he’s a sure tackler against the run.
Against the pass, Aguero shows plenty of range and appears to be reliable in zone coverage. He reacts quickly, closes well on open receivers down the field, and knows how to make a play on the ball. He’s a sure handed receiver, so when the ball is in the area, he's going to try and make a play on it. He’ll neeed to improve his man-to-man coverage, but that’s not something safeties in his position will have to do a lot of anyway. Aguero, like fomer Bulldog safety Lewis Cine, knows how to take a great angle to the ball carrier and make a play behind or at the line of scrimmage.
Overall, it’s easy to see why he was a major target for the Georgia staff. He’s a guy who stands out immidiately not onlty on Friday nights, but in camp settings as well. He shows good feet in drills, good hands, and he’s excellent against the run. He chcecks a lot of boxes, and the Georgia staff has to be thrilled tonight with his commitment.
Aguero is ranked as the No. 3 safety prospect and the No. 34 overall prospect in the country according to the 247 Composite Rankings. He gives Georgia their 17th commitment in the 2023 class and fourth DB commitment, joining 5-star CB AJ Harris, 4-star CB Justyn Rhett, and 4-star CB Daniel Harris.
