ATHENS - One of Kirby Smart’s biggest targets in the 2023 class is nearing a decision.
That would be five-star safety, Caleb Downs.
The top-ranked prospect in the peach state and one of the best overall prospects in the country, Downs is a true game-changing safety who will make an immediate impact wherever he chooses to play at the next level.
Downs took official visits in June to Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama, and Ohio State, and he confirmed to Dawg Post that he plans to make a commitment “towards the end of July”.
The 5-star spoke with Irish Sports Daily’s Christian McCollum to break down some of his finalists.
The Fighting Irish have always made Downs a top priority and the No. 1 safety in the country knows he’s wanted in South Bend.
On Notre Dame's Pitch...
“We can do anything anybody else can”, Downs told McCollum. “They’re definitely able to compete with the top talent in the nation.”
On Georgia’s Pitch...
“Stay home and be developed at home. You don’t need to go far to get the same type of development.”
“To build a legacy where I already have a small one definitely adds fuel to the fire; to start a legacy where you already are.”

On Whether He'll 5th OV to Texas or Texas A&M
“Potentially. I just thought of taking another one and those are both schools I would maybe want to visit to see what they have to offer. Those are the two schools I came up with.”
On Texas A&M's Pitch...
“Come and be a part of another good recruiting class.”
If Texas Landing Arch Manning Got His Attention...
“It does. It shows they can recruit well enough to be able to compete in the next few years, so it’s definitely a good thing.”
On Friendship with Arch...
“Just visits and just respecting each other from what everybody else has said about us. We both know we have very good talents and will see each other at the next level.”
Downs wasn’t asked by McCollum about his recent official visit to Ohio State, but sources behind the scenes say the Buckeyes made quite the impression on the Mill Creek (GA) star. The Buckeyes have three current cornerbacks committed and two safeties committed, but they would take Downs in a heartbeat if he wanted to jump on board.
Other teams still involved in Downs’ recruitment are Alabama, Clemson, and North Carolina.
