ATHENS - Head coach Kirby Smart and new outside linebackers coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe have landed a commitment from one of their top in-state targets.
That would be four-star OLB/DE Gabriel Harris.
The now Valdosta standout is one of the more athletic EDGE defenders across the state in the 2023 class. At 6-foot-4 and 240-pounds, Harris is a pass-rushing specialist with length and impressive quickness off the ball. He dominated off the edge last season for Thomas County Central, and lived in the backfield every Friday night.
As a junior last fall, Harris made 49 tackles through his first nine games along with 12.5 TFLs and seven sacks. He’s strong enough to power through most offensive linemen, but his overall quickness off the ball is what makes him one of the top pass-rushers in Georgia. He knows how to get after the quarterback and can get to him in a number of ways. He can use his speed to go outside, but he’s active and strong enough to slip through gaps in the interior. He’s a sure tackler and knows how to set the EDGE against the run as well.
He moves well for his size, runs well, and has impressive athleticism for someone 240-pounds. Harris was also a top performer during the Atlanta Under Armour Camp in late February.
The four-star defender has been to Georgia for a number of visits, and in the end, he chose the Bulldogs over Florida, Florida State, among others. He’s one of the top overall defenders in South Georgia, and now he’s headed to play in Athens.
Harris becomes Uzo-Diribe’s first commitment since coming to Georgia, and it’s a big one. Dawg Post ranks Harris as the No. 10 prospect in Georgia for the 2023 class. Harris is ranked in the 247 Composite Rankings as the No. 8 EDGE defender and No. 90 overall prospect in the country.
