ATHENS - Georgia Bulldogs QB JT Daniels has tested positive for COVID-19 according to a report in the Athens Banner-Herald.
The news about Daniels comes only ten days out from the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens. Daniels’ availability for the game could depend on when he first felt the symptoms of COVID.
Daniels has served as the backup for Stetson Bennett for some time now. Kirby Smart said on Monday that he was happy with the play of his quarterbacks so far in their preparations for the match with Michigan.
“All four of those guys have done a tremendous job working.” Kirby said. “Brock (Vandergriff) has been giving us a great picture down on the scout team end. JT (Daniels) and Stetson (Bennett) are both doing a really good job simulating the offense that Coach Monken wants to do. Like I talk about all the team, we are going to play the guy that gives us the best chance to win. I am really proud of the way both of those guys have practiced. We have done four or five camp-type practices and two that were really focused on Michigan. Both guys Stetson and JT have been really good in terms of being locked-in and really focused on what we need to focus on.”
Georgia officials have not issued a statement regarding Daniels’ status, and there is no media availability for the Bulldogs until they land on the afternoon of December 26 in Miami. It is unclear if Daniels is the only player dealing with a positive test right now.
The Bulldogs are set to continue practice until breaking for Christmas. Nolan Smith said Tuesday that much of the team had returned to wearing masks inside the Bulldogs' facility as COVID cases have surged in America once more.
“I know everyone thought we were done with the masks,” Smith said. “But now the masks have come back. Anything to win games. It’s all about keeping our team safe.”
