ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the country - according to the College Football Playoff Committee.

Kirby Smart’s undefeated Bulldogs have used two quarterbacks, a slew of running backs and a killer defense to smother opponents on the way to the top. The Bulldogs take on Missouri this week, but the Tigers are not considered by experts to have much chance to trip up the Dawgs. FanDuel lists Georgia as a 38-point favorite for this weekend’s game in Athens

Smart said Tuesday night that he would rather his players watch the Atlanta Braves in the World Series rather than the revealings of the rankings. Smart also would not commit to naming Stetson Bennett as the Dawgs’ starting signal caller for this weekend’s game against Missouri.

Georgia is permitting 6.6 points a game while scoring 37.9. Georgia opponents have scored just 53 points in 2021. That eight-game tally is the lowest since 1971 when the Bulldogs had allowed 46 through eight contests.

UGA has powered to four wins in 2021 over ranked teams - No. 3 Clemson, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 18 Auburn and No. 11 Kentucky

This is not the first time the Dawgs have had the top ranking in the CFP. Georgia was No. 1 in the College Football Playoff poll was for two weeks during the 2017 season (Oct. 31, Nov. 7). The Dawgs wound up win the SEC over No. 2 Auburn that year before beating No. 2 Oklahoma and falling to No. 4 Alabama in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game in Atlanta.

The Bulldogs clinched a spot in the 2021 SEC Championship Game with their 34-7 win over Florida and teamed with Kentucky’s 31-17 loss at Mississippi State over the weekend. Georgia tied the record for the earliest (Oct. 30) in league history to clinch, joining Auburn (2004) and Alabama (1993). This will mark the Bulldogs’ fourth trip to the SECCG in the last five years (2017-19) during Kirby Smart’s sixth year as head coach. Georgia will make its ninth appearance in the SECCG where the Dogs are 3-5, winning titles in 2002, 2005 and 2017.
