ATHENS - The Georgia Bulldogs’ injuries are starting to add up for Kirby Smart and his coaching staff.

One Saturday five presumed starters on the offensive side of the ball missed the Dawgs’ first scrimmage of the season. Now multiple reports have two more key players who are on pace to miss Georgia’s season opener with Clemson - tight end Darnell Washington and defensive back Tykee Smith

Smart confirmed the injuries, but didn’t give a timetable for a return.

“Darnell Washington and Tykee Smith sustained foot injuries during practice this week,” Kirby Smart confirmed in a statement. “They are both undergoing treatment and have an excellent prognosis.  Their status is day-to-day.”

Both have suffered foot injuries that are said to keep them out for weeks. That news is particularly bad for the offense, which is dealing with a slew of injuries to pass catchers including: George Pickens (ACL), Dominick Blaylock (ACL), Jermaine Burton (sprained ankle), Kearis Jackson (knee), John FitzPatrick (foot sprain) and Arik Gilbert (personal).

Washington ended last year with 166 yards on seven catches. Smith was considered one of the top transfers in college football when he left West Virginia for UGA earlier this year.

“We are beat up a little bit at wide out, we have some injuries so we don’t have all of our guys out there,” Kirby Smart said Saturday after the Bulldogs’ scrummage. “We have a lot of guys injured all around, but this time of year I think everyone does. But the most important thing for us is to get some reps tomorrow, get healed up, and we will get back to work on Monday.”

Kirby added that Smith and Latavious Brini “have split that time” at the star position.

“I would say that both those guys  are neck and neck,” he said of the competition between the two to start.

Georgia was not scheduled to practice on Wednesday, which was the first day of classes for the fall semester.
