ATHENS - Most folks correctly assumed that the Georgia Bulldogs’ defense under Kirby Smart would be pretty good when he was hired in late 2015. And they have been. 

But that assumption was not as quickly passed on to UGA defensive coordinator Dan Lanning when he took over that job heading into the 2019 season. Lanning was young. He had never been a defensive coordinator.
