ATHENS - After a slow start to the wide receiver class, Kirby Smart and Cortez Hankton have really turned it up this week, landing a commitment from three-star Dillon Bell earlier this month, and they’ve now landed a commitment from one of the top playmakers across the Peach State.
That would be Calhoun (GA) wide receiver, Cole Speer.
The big-time receiver from North Georgia may not be the flashiest receiver out there, but he’s as productive as it gets. At 6-foot-0, 185-pounds, Speed has decent size, but his speed is what makes him stand out the most. Speer is one of the more explosive receivers in the state and has a knack for getting behind the defense.
Don’t let the low ranking fool you, Speer has SEC talent. He’s a legit 4.4 40-yard guy and knows how to run routes. He’s not just a “burner” who can only run in a straight line. This is a guy can change directions and make a defender look silly. He’s always one of the top athletest on the field at any given moment and can make plays on special teams and on defense as a defensive back as well.

Right now, Speer makes it look easy. He’s a natural football player with good speed who has a knack for making plays. As a receiver, Speer can get behind defenses down the field, but he’s also a threat in the screen game. He won’t make it look this easy in Athens, but it’s easy to see why the Georgia staff gave him a spot in this class.
He may not be ranked as high as receivers like Evan Stewart or Kojo Antwi or Luther Burden, but he plays a position of need and will give everything he has for the Georgia football program.
The Bulldogs now have three wide receiver commitments in Speer, three-star Dillon Bell, and four-star De'Nylon Morrissette. They are also still actively recruiting 5-star Oklahoma commit Luther Burden, four-star Jayden Gibson, four-star Andre Greene Jr., among others.
