ATHENS - UGA starting cornerback Tyson Campbell has decided to skip his senior season in Athens and enter the 2021 NFL.
The former 5-star prospect out of American Heritage signed with the Georgia Bulldogs over Alabama, Florida, and many others, helping Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs sign the nation’s top recruiting class in 2018. While a few of those five-stars decided to transfer elsewhere, Campbell is one who made the most of his opportunities and ended up starting at cornerback for multiple games in each season.
Campbell started 11 games as a freshman and made a quick impact. He became a fan favorite on the road against Missouri where he recovered a fumble early in the game and took it back for a 64-yard touchdown.
The 6-foot-2 185-pounder is one of the fastest players in all of college football with the size and experience to possibly push himself into the first round. As a sophomore, Campbell missed 5 games, but still showed first-round potential. He made 15 tackles, broke up four passes, and recovered a fumble for a touchdown against rival Georgia Tech.
As a junior in 2020, Campbell started every game of the shortened 2020 season, making 26 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, four pass breakups, and intercepted a pass against South Carolina. His career high in tackles came against LSU as a freshman in 2018 when he made 11 total stops. While he only has one career interception, Campbell showed he’s a true cover corner and shutdown Auburn star receiver Seth Williams in 2020.
He’s given up some touchdowns this fall, but his coverage overall has been very good as a junior. His plan out of high school was to be a three-and-out player, and that’s exactly what he became at Georgia.
