Legge's Thoughts: Easy Ed and LSU Come to Media Days
ATLANTA – Here's a look at LSU coach Ed Orgeron and the Tigers heading into the 2018 season.
Last season: 9-4, (6-2 SEC)
Last game vs. UGA: UGA 44, LSU 41 in Athens
Series Record: LSU leads 16-13-1
Last five meetings vs. UGA: UGA 3, LSU 2
Most memorable Georgia win: 2013 – No. 9 Georgia and Aaron Murray take out No. 6 LSU and former UGA QB Zach Mettenburger in one of the classic games in Sanford Stadium history.
Most painful Georgia loss: 2003 – No. 7 UGA falls in the final minute of the day at No. 11 LSU. Nick Saban’s Tigers lost only once that year - 19-7 to the Gators in October - on the way to the 2003 BCS National Title.
Legge’s Take: It had to be hard for Easy Ed Orgeron to survive a 37-7 loss at State followed up two weeks later by getting worked at home by Troy. But survive Orgeron did, and with the exception of a two-touchdown loss to Alabama and a dissipating loss to Notre Dame in the bowl game, LSU pretty well recovered.
Tight wins over the Gators (17-16) and Auburn (27-23) probably allowed Easy Ed to retain his position. But he’s going to have to move forward this season, or it could be curtains for him again - and the path is a difficult one.
The opener against Miami is a coin flip. Two weeks later the Tigers go to Auburn. Back-to-back games at Florida, vs. Georgia and vs. State will probably determine if Orgeron saves his job. He can’t lose all three and probably needs to win at least two of those games.
After an off week LSU hosts Alabama, but no one is giving the Tigers much of a chance to beat Bama. We’ve seen this game be in prime time for years… and six years in a row LSU has lost to Alabama… with the last three games being decided by double digits.
It sure seems like poop or get off the pot time for Easy Ed in Baton Rouge. One win over UGA, Auburn, Miami or even Alabama won’t get the job done. He needs a solid, 10- or 11-win season to quiet the noise.
For now.
