ATHENS - UGA coach Kirby Smart said Saturday that the Georgia Bulldogs were ready to move on without Jamie Newman.

Smart, who is entering his fifth season as head coach at UGA, said the Bulldogs will continue with the four scholarship quarterbacks they have - including former USC starter JT Daniels. Georgia is ranked No. 4 going into the 2020 season.

“I respect Jamie, or anyone who ops out. He came and let me know on Tuesday. I think he announced it on Wednesday,” Kirby said after the Bulldogs’ second scrimmage on Saturday.

He added that the Bulldogs will continue to figure out their quarterback situation as the season draws closer.

“It is a work in progress,” he said. “We had guys that went out and practice well. You want to have guys take charge. I wish I could say someone who has a lead. JT and D'wan went with the ones a lot today. Carson (Beck) went with the twos a lot. I don't know what to say. We are going to keep competing.”

Kirby added that he expects JT Daniels to be cleared to play by the opener against Arkansas, but added that he would have to wait for clearance from UGA’s medical staff.

“I am under the assumption (that Daniels will be cleared) and that will happen (before the Arkansas game). We expect him to be cleared by the first game, but that's not a certainty. That's going to boil down to our doctors.”
