COVINGTON - The Georgia Bulldogs just beat out Clemson, Auburn and Tennessee for one of the nation’s top cornerbacks in four-star DB Nyland Green‍.

Today’s commitment means seven consensus Top 100 players are committed to UGA with about eight days to go before Signing Day. The commitment moved the Bulldogs up to No. 3 in the consensus rankings behind only No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Ohio State.

Green was offered by the Bulldogs back in November 2019 and has been a priority for the Georgia staff ever since. The Bulldogs were considered the favorite to land Green in early 2020, mainly February and March, but then Clemson and Auburn started gaining momentum during the spring.

It appeared Clemson had the momentum going into the summer. That shifted to Auburn by the fall. Then Tennessee seemed to be in a great spot to land him in October. But it was Georgia at the end - landing this big-deal in-state commitment.

So what makes Green such a special prospect? Dawg Post spoke with Newton defensive backs coach Josh Skelton for insight.

“Nyland is the best overall athlete I've coached in eight years,” Skelton said. “He has great size at 6'2 and can drop his hips like a 5'9 cornerback. His arms are extremely long which has made him dominant at the line of scrimmage. He has a big baseball background, and I really think that has made his hand-eye coordination elite. He has the best ball skills I've seen at the high school level.”

“He’s by far the top corner in the country,” Skelton added. “He’s played every position in the secondary for us. (nickel, safety, and corner). You know as an opposing coach that if he catches an interception that it’s going to the house. He has elite speed and change of direction. He really believes in playing great technique.”

That’s exactly what Kirby Smart is looking for in his cornerbacks - technique. Green is working hard to perfect his craft, and it’s has been noticable.

“His work ethic and leadership is the first thing I always mention,” Skelton continued. “He is highly confident. His confidence strictly comes from knowing that nobody has worked harder than him. He’s special.”

The commitment is a huge pickup for the Bulldogs. He’s one of the nation’s best for a reason, and he will have an opportunity to play early in 2021. In a limited season this fall, Green still proved why he’s one of the nation’s top prospects. He accounted for 57 total tackles, five TFLs, one sack, five interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

On offense, Green caught 42 passes for 838 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 21 times for 301 yards and four TDs. Green also returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Considered one of the top athletes in the state, Green is dangerous with the ball in his hands. He could play some receiver and return kicks/punts on special teams in college if he absolutely had to.

Dawg Post ranks Green as the No. 6 overall prospect in Georgia. A consensus of national rankings put Green as the No. 5 cornerback prospect and the No. 69 overall prospect in the 2021 class.
