Former UGA QB Matthew Stafford has been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list for the Detroit Lions.
The Lions would not confirm that Stafford is out with COVID-19, but NFL policy dictates that players wind up on that list if they have “had close contact with someone who has contracted the novel coronavirus or he has tested positive for COVID-19.”
Stafford was the staring quarterback at UGA for nearly all of his three years in Athens from 2006 to 2008. He was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in 2009 by the Lions. Stafford’s wife, Kelly, survived brain tumor surgery in 2019. The two have four girls.
Stafford is eligible to return to the Lions after receiving clearance from medical officials.
