But Are They Killers?

ATHENS - During a radio interview today one of the basics of the off-season came up.

“Dean, what’s the weakness of this team?”

“Punter? I mean, they don’t know who the punter would be.”

That was not an acceptable answer (although it is true) for the hosts. Then I pointed out that while most of the positions were really well, sorry, positioned, I do wonder a little about the defensive line.

“Are those guys killers?”

That’s my question, and its not one of these “hey, let’s motivate, or I don’t like them or this is some sort of put down”

I know these days coaches and players use anything to motivate them, but using the media or “haters” as motivation isn’t good enough. You make your own motivation - at least the great ones I have been around… Ben Jones, A.J. Green, David Pollack, David Andrews and others just worked.

Back to the point - It is a legit question: Collectively as a group is the defensive line at Georgia a bunch of killers, or are they just really good unit?

I don’t know. I know what they “can” be. I’ve seen Johnathon Ledbetter and Tyler Clark make great individual plays. Is Brent Cox a killer? He looks like he could be. Malik Herring has show flashes. Julian Rochester has become a steady, dependable player. David Marshall has also done his thing.

But as a group can they be shut down? No one mentioned them a season ago, which means either they were doing their job letting the linebackers make plays or dominating their man and making the play themselves.

The skill level on this group is where it needs to be. That’s why I am so curious to see what the future holds for a group that few people think about.

Jake Fromm can put a fishhook in his leg, and ESPN is writing about it. No one thinks about the defensive line. No one thinks about them unless they are killers.
