95 Days to Kickoff - Dawg Post Countdown
ATHENS - It was one of the most important drives in Georgia history.
And it was a year following the most important drive in UGA history.
The Gators had No. 4 Georgia in the same spot they did the season before - losing in the fourth quarter in Jacksonville. But for Florida it was deja vu all over again.
This time it was Georgia’s star running back Herschel Walker. The Bulldogs were down 21-20, and at their own four-yard line this 10:16 to go in the game.
There was no miracle this time. Larry Munson didn’t need a new chair.
This time Georgia ground the Gators down and took the game from them. Buck Belue marched Georgia on a 17-play, game-winning drive that took up 7:45 and ate up all 95 yards. Walker dove over the top and into the end zone as the Bulldogs with 2:31 to play.
In the end No. 4 Georgia beat Florida 26-21 on November 7, 1981 in Jacksonville.
The win over the Gators was followed up by the Dawgs taking out Auburn 24-13 a week later in Athens to wrap up the program’s first back-to-back SEC championships in school history.
